<p>PURPOSE:To provide stably a high contrast display free from generation of residual image by furnishing transparent electrode on a pair of base boards, and equipping at least either of them with orientation films including specific structure unit and a liquid crystal which has chiralsmectic phase. CONSTITUTION:Insulation films 13a, 13b and orientation control films 14a, 14b formed from polyimide as expressed by Eq. I are put one over another on base boards 11a, 11b covered with transparent electrodes 12a, 12b. A ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal 15 is arranged between the base boards 11a, 11b, and the distance between them is set to a value small enough to suppress formation of the spirally oriented structure of liquid crystal 15, and in it a bistable orientation state is generated. Thereby the contrast between the light and dark conditions will be increased, and no decrease in residual image is generated which is otherwise irritating.</p> |
