Anodes intended for the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of halides are made wholly or partially from alloys of palladium with platinum or rhodium, having by weight 3%-80% palladium and 97%-20% rhodium or 5%-80% palladium and 95%-20% platinum, and are given an oxide surface layer by heating at 180‹C.-1, 350‹C. in an oxidizing atmosphere or by electrolytic oxidation in a fused salt bath. Preferably the oxidizing atmosphere is air but oxygen may be used. If the salt bath is used it may be made up of sodium sulphate or sodium nitrate. The rhodium-palladium alloys may be made by sintering mixtures of metal powders and the platinum-palladium alloys by fusing their constituents in a vacuum electric furnace. They may make up the entire body of the anodes, or may be coated on other electro-conductive material, suitably by electrolytic plating or by application of a solution of chlorides of their constituents in reducing organic solvents such as alcohol and lavender oil, followed by heattreatment to form the alloys. The use of alloys of platinum and palladium with Pt:Pd ratios by weight of 6:4, 3:7 and 5:5 and of alloys of rhodium and palladium with Rh:Pd ratios of 7:3 and 5:5 is discussed. Titanium substrates may be plated with a platinum-palladium alloy having a weight ratio of 6:4 by electrolysis in an aqueous bath containing sodium phosphate, ammonia, chlorplatinic acid and dinitro di-ammino palladium or may be coated with a rhodium-palladium alloy having a weight ratio of 7:3 by application of the metal chlorides in alcohol and lavender oil and their reduction, and the alloy coatings so formed oxidized in air. |
