The invention relates to a process for making mouldings with a porous surface and close surface pore radius distribution and the use of these mouldings as bearers for securing or immobilising indicators, catalysts, a bio-mass or parts of the bio-mass. The mouldings are coated with small, uniform particles with a narrow particle size distribution of a material capable of agglomeration without the application of pressure or the addition of a binder and at temperatures below 120 DEG C so that the interstices between the small uniform particles on the surface of the mouldings form pores with a close pore radius distribution. The shape and size of the pore radii are determined by the shape and size of the small uniform particles and the pore radius distribution is determined by the particle size distribution.
