Perylene dyestuffs N,N'-di(ethyl or beta- (het)aryl-ethyl) -perylene-bis (dicarboximide) of formula (I) are new. In (I) R1-6 = H or H and 1-4 of a) isocyclic aromatic, pref. mono- to tetracyclic, esp. mono- or bicyclic gps. (e.g. (bi)phenyl or naphthyl) or hetaryl, pref. mono- to tricyclic, which may be purely heterocyclic or contain condensed benzene rings e.g. pyridyl, pyrimidyl, pyrazinyl, triazinyl, furanyl etcc (50 are listed) opt. with the usual substits. not rendering (I) soluble in water, esp. those under (b); and halogen (e.g. Cl, Br, I or F); opt. branched alkyl (pref. with 1-18, esp. 1-12, partic. 1-8 and more partic. 1-4C); -OR10; CN; -N(R8)(R9); -COR7; -N(R11)-COR7; -N(R10)COOR7; -N(R10)-CON(R8)(R9); -NHSO2R7; -SO2R7 or -SOR7; -CONR8R9; -SO2NR8R9; -N=N-R12; -OCOR7; -OR; and -OCONHR7R8; R7 = alkyl, aryl or heterocyclyl; R8 and R9 = H, (substd.) alkyl, 3-24C cycloalkyl or (het)aryl; or R8+R9+ another of the R2-4 gps. = a 5-6-membered (hetero)-ring; R10=H, alkyl, 3-24C cycloalkyl or (het)aryl; R11=H, alkyl, benzyl, phenyl, 1- or 2-naphthyl, cycloalkyl, thienyl, pyranylmethyl or furfuryl; R12 = the radical of a coupling component or (substd.) phenyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) have strong metallic lustre varying from bronze to metallic green, according to the substits. on the N atoms and are used in the prodn. of special optical effects, i.e. metallic effects; in systems requiring strong reflection of light; in the prodn. of special (metallic) lacquers and metallic distempers; for bulk colouration of plastics, e.g. PVC, cellulose acetate, polycarbonate, polyamide, polyimides, polybenzimidazoles, melamine resins, silicons, polystyrene or PMMA; for producing polymers with optical effects by mixing (I) with the monomer(s) before polycondensation, polyaddition or polymerisation, e.g. free radical, anionic, cationic or metal complex polymerisation; for decorative and artistic purposes; in reference panels, etc. with special reflection of light; in reflective systems providing thermal protection from radiation; and in systems for producing diffuse radiation, e.g. light diffusors for lighting purposes.
