The end of the valve stem (2) protruding into part of the cylinder head casing (1) is enclosed in a hydraulic housing (6) contg. a rotary piston (8). A connecting channel (15) leading into a piston chamber (14) is opened by the rotation for pumping (18) of lubricant under pressure into a hydraulic chamber (7) until a ring (5) on the stem (2) abuts against a stop (4). The piston (8) is rotated by application of pulses (20) to an electromagnet (19). ADVANTAGE - Less costly valve incorporates few actuating elements, requires no hydraulic plungers for adjustment of its clearance, and generates no camshaft noise.
