Azulene methine dyestuffs of formula (I) are used in electrophotography and in the prodn. of photoresists and printing plates where R = (substd.) 1-6C alkyl; X- = an anion; A+ = a heterocyclic gp.; n = 1, 2 or 3; m = 1 or 2. The prepn. of (I) (not claimed) is described e.g. in EP-338426. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used as charge carrier generating cpd. or sensitiser in electrophotographic recording elements, pref. of the multilayer type, esp. for making (offset) printing plates, photoresist patterns or photocopiers by reprography. Suitable for exposure with UV, visible, red and IR light, e.g. with a semiconductor laser, and gives excellent results. (Dwg.0/0)
