Each of four indepenent wheel suspensions (10,20,30,40) incorporates a shock-absorber (e.g. 11) with a stepping motor (17) linked to an electronic contrtol unit (ECU). Signals are provided by sensors of vertical, transverse and longitudinal accelerations (12,14,15), ground clearance, road speed, and steering angle (16). The fluid chamber of each suspension is supplied via a shutter whose aperture is adjusted by the stepping motor (17) on the basis of the vertical velocity which is brought into correspondence by reference to a data table. ADVANTAGE - Transmission of vibrations from road surface to body of vehicle minimised.
