The number of polarity changes in an incoming signal is periodically sampled for a defined time. Each incoming line (AL1,..ALn) is individually sampled. The polarity changes are counted and compared with the number of signal polarity changes to be expected at the transmission rate at which the data system is operating. If this number if exceeded the affected line (AL1,..ALn) is switched out to eliminate disturbance to the data processing system (EDS). In the processing system (EDS) there are memories (LB,NB) in which the incoming line signals are stored as control signal (LB) and as data (NB) whose polarity count is to be checked. After decoding (DEC) the individual line polarity changes (Z1,..Zn) are compared with the norm and a signal (G) sent to the control unit (PE) if spurious additional changes are detected.
