The valve needle (8) impelled by a spring (13) has a guide (18) extending from its seating (15) to a control piston (19) of greater dia. at its other end. A pin (21) on top of the piston (19) is aligned with a bore (25) of slightly larger diameter into the fuel supply line (11). A slider (4) incorporating a control groove (33) is driven electromagnetically or electrohydraulically into a bore (32) connecting this line (11) with an inlet (10) pressurised by a plunger (6). ADVANTAGE - Short ignition delay, reducing noise and pollutant emissions and enhancing air utilisation and power output.
