In the method proposed, a cleaning device passes continuously along the spinning machine. This device has a head with a cutting blade and suction nozzle. The cleaning device also has a positioning device which uses markings on the spinning machine to position the head opposite a spindle on the spinning machine. The invention calls for an endless belt (16, 116) to pass over two wheels (15, 115) mounted to rotate about vertical axes. The belt carries several heads (17, 117) disposed so that they pass a certain distance from the spindles (20) and is brought by rotation of one of the wheels (15, 115), controlled by the positioning device, into a position in which the heads (17, 117) facing the spindles (20) engage in the annular grooves (35) in the spindles (20). The belt (16, 116) is then moved at a speed equal to the speed of advance of the device and at which the side of the belt nearest the spindles (20) moves in the direction opposite to the direction of advance. The belt (16, 116) can be driven by one of the wheels (15, 115), controlled by the positioning device. The invention also concerns a device for carrying out the method, this device having a support structure (9, 109) with two wheels (15, 115) mounted to rotate about vertical axes and over which an endless belt (16, 116) passes.
