A circuit breaker 5 has its operating member 107 connected through a thrust-transmitting link member 115 to the knee 16 of a toggle 47, one of the toggle links 53 being pivotally connected to a movable contact arm 39, and a pivotally mounted angle-link 49 being operatively connected between a pivotally mounted trip member 71 and the other of the toggle links 55 and being maintained in a position to prevent collapse of toggle 47 by member 71 until the trip device 27, responsive to overload current, unlatches the trip member 71 and permits movement of angle-link 49, causing collapse of toggle 47 under the action of a torsion spring 45 biasing the contact arm 39 in a contact opening direction. The trip device 27 comprises a U-shaped magnetic member 127, attracting a pivoted magnetic latch member 81 upon overload, and a bimetal 95 engaging a calibrating screw 87 on member 81 to provide thermal tripping. Alternatively member 81 is non- magnetic but carries a magnetic member. A torsion spring 113 biases the operating member 107 clockwise, and provides automatic resetting on tripping if made sufficiently strong. The latch member 81 co-operates with a latch member 75 engaging the trip member 71. Upon tripping in either unit of a two-pole unit, latch 75 engages a pivoted member 137 connected with a similar member in the other unit to provide simultaneous tripping. A handle tie member 135 connects the handles 105 of the two pole units together. A slot-and-pin connection 65, 67, is provided between the angle-link 49 and trip member 71, see also Fig. 6 (not shown), and the pivots 63, 73, for these members 49, 71, extend between side plates 64, Fig. 5. The clamping of the rigid conductor 93 between the housing parts 11, 13, is described in Specification 1,211,522.
