The osmometric cell (1) has a pressure measurer (3) with a transducer delivering an electrical signal proportional to the hydrostatic pressure within the cell. The cell membrane (2) allows rapid exchange of a reference soln. used to set a working pressure, for the soln. to be analysed, with monitoring of the pressure. The osmometer soln. is selected so that the excess of the impermeable material relative to the reference soln. is not more than 80 mOsm. The difference in the content of the soln. to be analysed and the osmometer soln. is not more than 70 mOsm. The overall content of the impermeable material is determined by consideration of the material content in the osmometer soln.
