The engine fuel-injection pump comprises a plunger (3) working in a barrel (2) in the housing (1). The barrel contains a recess (4) with a radial inlet (6) and accomodating a fuel control slide (5) working in the axial direction. A radial gap for the incoming fuel is left between the slide and the recess wall. An oblique groove (22) and aperture (23) in the plunger wall form a control port, connected by a spill passage (24,25) in the plunger to the pump working chamber (18) and working with a control edge on the slide, so that the spill jet strikes the recess wall. The inlet is connected to a pump suction chamber (16) in the housing. Baffles are formed on the slide and/or barrel at the inlet, partly masking the gap (3) where this joins onto the suction chamber.
