The visible surfaces of the chair on the side remote from the user are not upholstered but have an at least partially structured or textured surface (7) such as studded or ribbed. The backrest can have a full-length surface texture (7) at the back. The stud elements forming the textured surface can be arranged in grid patterns. Where the visible surfaces are made from wood the surface structure can be press-formed in a heatable pressing mould. ADVANTAGE - The reverse side of the chair can be made of low-grade material yet still have an acceptable appearance.
