The converter utilises an input from a 3 phase mains (1) that has a frequency of 50 Hz and generates an output that is a single phase voltage with a frequency of 16 2/3 Hz. The supply is connected to the stator windings of the asynchronous motor (3). The rotor winding is coupled to the output of the converter that generates a frequency between 0 and 25 Hz. The rotor is shaft coupled (7), with the rotor of a single phase generator (5) having the output coupled to the supply rail (2). The system is ramped up to its normally operating state by using the converter to increase the frequency from 0 to 20 Hz giving an output of 40% of the full rating. The converter is then switched to provide an increase to full load.
