Several pairs of optical fibres are welded simultaneously by one broad arc. This arc is produced between two broad welding electrodes which extend across the adjoining pairs of optical fibres. A magnetic field is maintained during the welding operation between the electrodes such that the arc has to travel in reciprocating fashion across the width of the welding electrodes.
