An arrangement for detecting vehicle impacts contains an acceleration detector and an inflation decision circuit to decide whether an air bag should be inflated or not when it receives the sensor signal. A vehicle motion sensor detects vehicle movement not related to impact. An acceleration defect sensor signals faults to an alarm device which indicates them to the vehicle driver. The defect sensor receives the acceleration and motion sensor signals which it compares in order to detect faults. USE/ADVANTAGE - For use in air-bag device in motor vehicle. Does not require device such as diagnostic pulse signal generator to feed pulses to acceleration sensor.
