The optical sensor system, to monitor the fabric passing through a sewing machine, uses a sensor (40) which is limited to scanning a line of points across the direction (V) of fabric (10) movement during sewing. A scanning control system (51-54) repeatedly reads the light values of the points in the line, at time intervals corresponding to equal lengths of fabric movement. The line scanning duration is shorter than the scanning intervals. A memory (50) stores the picture signals for a given number (k) of line scans in succession. ADVANTAGE - The system is a low cost assembly, which occupies less room, and requires less data processing.
