A heavy metal alloy, based on 88-98 wt% W and a binding phase contg. Ni, Fe, Co, Cu, Ti, Al, W and/or Mo, is produced by: milling a mixt. of the raw materials in a high power attritor to form poorly classified powder, and densifying by various methods to create a two-phased structure. The binding phase is milled from powdered elements, cpds. (e.g. carbides, oxides and/or nitrides) or pre-alloys (e.g. Fe-A1 to minimise oxidn. or Nimonic-type alloys) in a wt. ratio of e.g. 7 Ni:3Fe. Milling is performed in a water-cooled horizontal high power attritor under reduced pressure and/or H2 protective atmos.. Mechanical alloying and complete homogenisation produce the desired compsn. Mixt. of further elements can occur due to removal of material by abrasion from suitably chosen mill walls, stirring arms and milling balls.
|
