Coin-selecting method and apparatus. It is included in product vending machines and similar; it has as its object to determine the authenticity of coins used in payment. The method establishes the various phases though which the apparatus passes in order to recognise the authenticity of a coin. The apparatus has a first optical sensor 5 to detect the presence of a possible thread affixed to the coin; which is connected to the supply source 20 and located close to a lever 4 in order to connect the supply source 20 when the coin displaces the said lever 4. It has three electromagnetic sensors 6, 7 and 8 which are connected to a single sinusoidal oscillator 10 which includes a second optical sensor 17 and a third optical sensor 18 which determine the initial velocity, acceleration and diameter of the coin. Close to the third electromagnetic sensor 8 it has two levers 13 and 14 which measure the weight of the coin, the values obtained are stored in the logic circuit 19 which realises the coin selection process. <IMAGE>
