This mechanism comprises a control device DM fixed to the structure E of the vehicle, a base B connected to an exterior mirror-holder casing, and a cover T to which is fixed the reflective surface. The control device DM links with the base B and with the cover T by means of three control cables 12a, 12b, 12c provided with sheaths 7a, 7b, 7c, the base B and the cover T being connected by means of a crosspiece. The base B forms, on one of its sides l, two prismatic extensions 23a, 23c and a channelled groove 23b and, on its other side D, three prismatic extensions 24a, 24b, 24c, which extensions 23a, 23c, 24a, 24b, 24c configure respective grooves 26a, 26c, 27a, 27b, 27c. The control cables 12a, 12b, 12c can slide via the aforesaid grooves 23b, 26a, 26c, 27a, 27b, 27c, compensating for the positional asymmetry of the mechanism depending on the side of the vehicle on which it is mounted.
