摘要 1302682 Nuclear fuel REACTOR CENTRUM NEDERLAND (STICHTING) 14 Jan 1970 [16 Jan 1969] 1848/70 Heading G6C [Also in Division C1] A fuel element for a nuclear reactor comprises or consists of solid particles of one or more metal oxides, or their hydrates, prepared by contacting an anion deficient aqueous solution of at least one hydrolysable salt of the metal(s), the hydroxide of which is sparingly soluble in water, with ammonia at an elevated temperature, separating off the particles thus formed, washing them and subjecting them to heat treatment. Carbon particles may be added to the aqueous solution for incorporation into the product particles. "Anion deficient salt solutions" are defined as those in which the ratio of anion concentration to metal ion concentration is lower than that of the normal salt, the term "anion" does not, however, include OH- in this context. The anion deficient salt solution may be mixed with a solution of an ammonia releasing agent whereby ammonia is released when the solution is at an elevated temperature and the mixed solution may be dispersed in a water immiscible liquid maintained at an elevated temperature. Specified metal salts are those of uranium, which may be mixed with those of thorium, zirconium, hafnium, yttrium, and rare earth metals, whilst examples describe the production of mixed urania/plutonia and of uranium oxides containing oxides of zirconium, lanthanum, or yttrium.
