A friction drive pulley for transmitting a traction force to a cable (C) includes a wheel (2) and an endless belt (3) wound at least once around the peripheral surface of the wheel (2) to support the cable (C) in use. The endless belt (3) consists of a series of spaced-apart pads (4) which are frictionally slidable on said wheel (2), each pad being connected to the adjacent pad by a resilient linking element (5) having a modulus of longitudinal elasticity and/or a size selected in such a way that, in use, the extension of the endless belt corresponds to that of the cable which is at a predetermined limit of tension.
