摘要 1,259,556. Altering physical properties. L. E. THOMPSON. 2 June, 1969 [19 Feb., 1969], No. 27781/69. Heading B3V. A method of stress relieving by -vibrations comprises vibrating a workpiece in the range of the resonant peak frequency for each part of the work to be relieved, and maintaining the vibration in the frequency range of each selected peak while the amplitude of the peak increases, the power required to produce the peak decreases and the frequency range decreases until the power necessary to produce the amplitude has substantially stabilized. The peak frequencies are determined by vibrating the work through a range of frequencies, e.g. 400-8000 c.p.m., and recording the changes in amplitude and the power requirement for the various frequencies. A continuous recording may be made of the treatment, and the step of vibrating the work through the range of frequencies may be repeated to determine if the stresses have been relieved or any new ones induced, requiring further treatment. A recording of amplitude against frequency before stress relieving is shown in Fig. 7 and often in Fig. 8, indicating a reduced peak 92 requiring further treatment which may require re-positioning of the vibrator on round or spherical work. Vibrations include primary waves in a direction Z, Fig. 1, secondary waves in a direction X and tertiary waves in direction Y. To stress relieve a weld R a frequency peak is chosen which produces resonance in the primary direction. Welds S, L are stress-relieved chasing frequency peaks producing resonance in the secondary and tertiary directions respectively. Apparatus for performing the method comprises an eccentric driven by a series electromotor 23 the speed of which is controlled by varying the current by a variable transformer controlled by a knob 25. The work 12 is mounted on rubber strips 28, 30 and to it is attached an accelerometer 16 including a transducer producing an electrical signal which is fed to an amplifier controlled by a knob 31. A tachometer registers the motor-speed and an ammeter the current drawn, the speed being proportional to the frequency of vibration and the current indicating the power required to produce the amplitude registered by the accelerometer. A portable cabinet 20 includes means 22 comprising an oscillograph, Fig. 2 (not shown), and/or a scriber-tape recorder, Fig. 3 (not shown), and/or a digital recorder, Fig. 4 (not shown), for recording frequency, amplitude and power.
