A free or captive lighter-than-air machine comprises one or two cylindrical balloons (10), oriented substantially horizontally, from which an assembly (26) is suspended by cables (28). Each balloon (10) includes an envelope (12), a front pole (14) a rear pole (16) of smaller cross-section than the front pole, and an interpolar linking member (18) of variable length, making it possible to vary the internal volume of the envelope. The cables (28) are advantageously wound freely around each of the balloons (10), in such a way that a measurement of the suspended member-balloons distance makes it possible to detect any variation pressure in the balloons. It is thus possible to keep this pressure constant by means of a servocontrol circuit (32). <IMAGE>
