In a machine tool a tool changer comprises a plurality of tool grippers 21, having jaws 31 actuated by cams carried by a slide 22 movable along guides by an hydraulic cylinder 30, and pivotable about the axis of a gear 23, by an hydraulic cylinder 29 which operates gear 23 through a rack 27, and gears 26, 25. In operation a signal is received from a tape reader which stops the machine spindle 10 in a predetermined angular position, the workpiece is retracted from the spindle, and slide 22 is extended by cylinder 30. The selected gripper 21 is moved in a circular arc into alignment with spindle 10, the jaws 31 grip the tool 14 at an annular groove 20, a drawbar 17 is moved against a spring 17A by an hydraulic cylinder 18, and a collet 15 releases the end 16 of the tool. Slide 22 moves to the left, Fig. 1, to remove the tool from the spindle, and gripper 21 is again pivoted so as to place the tool in the parking position. The tape selects the new tool, whose gripper is pivoted to align it with the spindle and the slide 22 is retracted to move the tool into the collet 15, the drawbar 17 being retracted by spring 17A. |
