<p>A method of joining members (1, 2) made of materials of dissimilar thermal expansion properties comprises providing an interlayer (5) between the members (1, 2). The interlayer (5) positioned between two juxtaposed planar surfaces of the members (1, 2) has a number of raised portions (6). Where the surfaces of the members (1, 2) contact the surfaces of the raised portion (6) of the interlayer (5) the surfaces are bonded together. An interlayer (5) for joining members (1, 2) made of materials having dissimilar thermal expansion properties comprises a soft metal sheet. The soft metal sheet has concentric laterally spaced corrugations (3). The joining method may be used for example to mount a ceramic head to a tappet for use in a car engine.</p> |
