An input video signal eg from a camcorder is mixed with a character signal in image processor 10 before recording 60. A memory card 20 inserted into a VCR or camcorder stores phrases or characters for use in a title which are selected by a user with keypad K or remote control 50. When the desired title has been assembled the mixed input video signal and character signal may be stored. The colour, size or position of the characters may be controlled by the user.
