The device comprises a prosthesis (15) in the form of a hollow body which is compressed against the action of return elastic forces on a reduced cross-section in comparison with a broadened useful position and held in this position by means of a removable casing (14). After the casing has been removed, the prosthesis automatically assumes a cross-section corresponding to the useful position. The casing, which may be a crocheted mesh, extends over the entire length of the prosthesis and consists of at least one continuous thread (17) and at least one pulling line (24). The prosthesis held in a radially compressed position by the casing may be fitted so as to be advanced on an introduction wire or secured axially to the leading end of a probe or catheter (11).
