Treatment of waste water from glass grinding - by passing water in periodical reversing direction across ultrafiltration membrane, recycling permeate and adding concentrate to molten glass

In the treatment of waste water from glass grinding works, the water is led in a periodically reversing direction across an ultrafiltration membrane, so that it is divided into permeate which passes through the membrane and a concentrate which does not. At least 90% of the permeate is returned to the grinding works, and the concentrate is added to the molten glass during glass prodn.. The membrane is cleaned by passing an object with a rough surface, such as a sponge ball, over it. Pref. water (1) from the grinding machinery enters a holding tank (2). USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in treating waste water such as is produced in glass grinding, which typically contains particles rich in Pb and As. The water and its contaminants are fully recycled.
