The checking device (1) uses a selection switch (11) to couple each optical fibre (2) in succession to a testing circuit. Different measuring devices (4,5,6) ascertain the optical attenuation for two different wavelengths and the transmission bandwidth. Pref. the optical signal inputs (12) of the selection switch (11) are coupled to the respective optical fibres (2) of an optical cable (3) being tested, via intermediate coupling elements (13), with inner and outer connections (15, 16) respectively coupled to the signal inputs (12) and the optical fibres (2). The latter are pref. supported by a connection block (17) attached to the checking device (1) so that the optical fibres (2) are aligned with the outer connections (16) of the coupling elements (13).
