In a glass reactor which incorporates a turbine stirrer, 400 ml of sunflower oil and 20g of nickel catalyst are mixed, involving 82 per cent nickel on a carrier of silicone dioxide-aluminium trioxide. The mixt. is heated to 180 deg. C., after which hydrogenation is commenced. Hydrogen gas is added at the rate of 25 ml/s (1 atm., 25 deg. C). Using a gas controlled feed coil of known volume (5.43 ml), different quantities of hydrogen sulphide are fed to a gas mixer, in which the main hydrogen gas flow is allowed to carry with it the hydrogen sulphide into the hydrogenation reactor. A flame photo-multiplicator reactor is connected to the reactor outlet, and permits a rapid and simple determn. of the amount of hydrogen sulphide absorbed by the catalyst. In all cases, the hydrogenation time is 70 minutes.
