Ink ribbon cassette holders on the printer frame are open at the top and are engaged by bearing journals (11a,11b,12a,12b) attached to the ink ribbon housing (10). A drive motor imparts a ligting motion to the ribbon housing via a camshaft and cams. The ink ribbon housing has two pairs of bearing journals for single and multiple colour ribbons. A flat support projection (13a,13b) is mounted on the broadside (3,4) of the ink ribbon housing (10) for each cam in its working position. Two pairs of bearing journals are used for a single colour ribbon. One pair is used for a multiple colour ribbon.
