The coil (1) is set up in a vacuum vessel surrounded by a screen (2) consisting of a base (3), a middle (4) and a top (5). All three parts are cast in concrete contg. spheres or grains of scrap iron, pref, pretreated thermally to improve its magnetic properties by heating in a nonreducing atmos. for about 1 h at 950 deg.C., followed by slow cooling except for the load-bearing material. ADVANTAGE - Store can be assembled in situ at reduced cost with customary reinforced concrete technology, finely-divided iron parts reducing eddy-current losses substantially.
