A steam iron is heated electrically and incorporates a number of outlets in the base for the distribution of steam. The ironing face of the base has bale-like indentations for receiving steam. The indentations are adjoined by bale-like raised sections which changeover continuously into the adjoining indentations with their radii of curvature. Each outlet opening is surrounded concentrically by a bale-like indentation. ADVANTAGE - The iron permits an evenly distributed steam layer to be formed between the item being ironed and the underside of the iron base.
