The invention concerns a method of controlling the operation of a propulsion unit consisting of an internal-combustion engine and an automatic gearbox, intended in particular for a motor vehicle. The method enables an output torque depending on several parameters to be generated, at the gearbox output, from the torque produced by the engine and as a function of the gear selected, the output torque (t out) being pre-determined, independently of the gear selected (g sel), as a function of the accelerator-pedal position (y) representing one parameter.
