Data for setting the operating conditions of an integrated circuit card is transferred from the card to a card terminal, and stored therein, the card thereafter being driven by the terminal under conditions set by the stored data. Signals for checking the compatibility of the card with the card terminal are exchanged between the card and the terminal so as to confirm compatibility.
