A suspension of fibrous materials comprising 30% glass fibres about 10 mm in length and 70% thermoplastic bonding agents, mainly polypropylene, was washed on to a shaping sieve having a mesh width smaller than the particle diameter of the bonding agents. Then dewatering was performed at a pressure of 6 bar. The resulting preform was dried to constant weight. In that condition it can be transported and put into intermediate storage. To finally fix the shape of the shaped body, it is heated to a temperature in the melting zone of the bonding agents, namely 200.degree.C and then pressed in a tempered pressing tool at 70.degree.C and a pressure of 20 bar. During production the total length of the glass fibres remains preserved, so that their strength is fully maintained. The properties of the resulting shaped member are comparable with those of shaped members produced by the extrusion process from glass mat-thermoplastics. |
