The plasma display device comprises two substrates (10,20) having a front plate (10) and a back plate (10). A number of stripe type anodes (A) and cathodes (K) are formed on the substrates (10)(20) respectively in the form of X-Y matrices. A number of grooves (G) are formed in an insulating layer (21) formed on the back face plate and the cup-shaped cathodes are formed on the botton of the grooves. The plasma display device have a low plasma discharge holding voltage and a high cathode current density by using the cup-shaped cathodes.
