Luminescent compounds containing a chemiluminescent acridine derivative with formula I <IMAGE> where R1 signifies hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, benzyl, phenyl or naphthyl, R2 and R3 means hydrogen, alkyl, amino, mono- or dialkyl or cyclical amino, carboxy, alkoxy, cyano, nitro or halogen, R4 has formula II, V or VI <IMAGE> where X signifies alkylene or phenylene, which can also contain heteroatoms, R5 signifies a reactive group which under gentle conditions can selectively bond to amino, carboxy, thiol or other functional groups in substances of biological interest, A<IMAGE> signifies an anion, which does not adversely affect the chemiluminescence, and R6 signifies alkyl, alkenyl, substituted amino, or possibly substituted benzyl or aryl, and also hydrogen in formula VI.
