Equipment for removing liquid from a tank or like vessel, such as one of the tanks 1 of an oil cargo ship comprises an auxiliary tank 9 located in a pump room 5 near the bottom 4 of the ship. In each tank 1 a branch pipe 8 extends downwardly from the inlet pipe 6 of the auxiliary tank 9 with a bell-mouthed inlet 7 located just above the bottom 4. A main oil pump 10 in a discharge line 12 withdraws oil via the auxiliary tank 9 from each tank 1 in turn. Air or gas separating from the oil in the auxiliary tank 9 escapes through a vent pipe 11 either to atmosphere as shown on to the upper part of the tank 1. When the level in the tank 1 has fallen so far that the level in the auxiliary tank 9 begins to fall, a valve 15 is opened and a level control means 17 is activated, as by means of a manually operated switch, whereby a throttle valve 13 is automatically controlled to maintain the level in the auxiliary tank 9 at a predetermined height. A portion of the discharge from the main pump 10 now passes via a by-pass line 14 to energize a jet pump 16 which assists in pumping out the remainder of the oil in the tank 1.</p> |
