PURPOSE:To improve the picture quality of an intermediate tone picture area by providing an intermediate tone area discrimination means discriminating an intermediate tone area of a picture signal and avoiding smoothing correction to a picture signal of the intermediate tone area. CONSTITUTION:A picture processing section 3 does not make smoothing correction processing to a read picture signal BV corresponding to a picture element of an address represented by an intermediate tone area data DHT entered from a scanner 5 but applies processing to convert the read picture signal BV into a signal having a double resolution simply.
