The invention relates to a device for supporting and protecting ultrasonic transducers, which serves both as a device for focusing ultrasound and as a device for facilitating the transmission of the ultrasound. In its simplest form, it consists of a structure (1) with one surface (2) which is spherical and the other surface (3) containing holes (4) in order to house ultrasonic transducers (5) in them. The faces (6) of the holes (4) are planar and perpendicular to the radius of curvature (7) of the spherical surface (2). The thickness (8) between the two faces (2 and 6) corresponds to a quarter wave of the ultrasound. More sophisticated forms are also described. The device according to the invention is particularly intended for focusing ultrasonic waves for applications in medicine, such as lithotripsy and heat treatment (hyperthermy), and for non-destructive testing of materials. <IMAGE>
