The invention relates to the measurement of the level of liquids which are not electrically insulating. The invention resides in the fact that the conductivity of the liquid is employed to make one plate of a variable-surface capacitor in order to constitute a level gauge (sensor) with a capacitive method intended to measure the level of any non-insulating liquid, comprising a central conductor (core) (6) in electrical contact with the liquid be measured, surrounded by an electrically separated shielding 4, the latter constituting a capacitor with the mass of the liquid, the value (capacitance) of which varies with the level, and moreover providing protection of the core 6 against possible external electrostatic interference. This type of gauge includes, at its bottom end 7, an electric contactor of suitable shape and made of suitable material, which allows the liquid to be charged by the central conductor 6.
