Two pairs of electrodes 9, 10 and 11, 12 coated on the four principal surfaces of a piezoelectric quartz rod are connected to metal coatings 5 and 6 on the end portions of the rod, such that the electric fields are limited to a central portion of the rod. The electrodes and end-screening coatings may be formed by uniformly coating the rod and thereafter etching the coating away along a meandered line (Fig. 4, not shown).
