The controllable valve at the outlet from a piston-type supercharger (10) driven by the exhaust pulses from an i.c. engine, with an expansion chamber with exhaust inlet and outlet, enclosed by a moving piston, is actuated by the exhaust pulse cycle. The valve is controlled in synchronism with the exhaust pulses, with the energy to operate it derived from the incoming exhaust gases pulses. The charger piston (312) can be driven by this energy to act directly, or via a separate mechanism, on the valve closure plug (343).
