PURPOSE:To facilitate and ensure the judgement of an abnormal carriage travel action by a method wherein pulses issued from a pulse generator in relation to the movement of a printing head are counted, a carriage travel start position and a travel end position are detected, a difference between the aforesaid positions is calculated, and the count value is compared with the calculated value. CONSTITUTION:Upon start of a detection action, (travel end position) - (travel start position) is calculated when a carriage moves forward and (travel start position) -(travel end position) is calculated when the carriage moves reverse to find an estimate travel amount L. The estimate travel amount L is found by a travel position detection means 22 and an estimate travel amount detection means 23. A spacing motor is driven to start the counting of feed back pulses L1. The feed back pulse is issued every time when the carriage travels by a fixed distance. The number of the feed back pulses L1 is compared with the estimate travel amount L. If the number of the feed back pulses L1 is larger than the estimate travel amount L1 an abnormal carriage travel action is recognized, and the drive of the spacing motor is stopped. |
