The forming device is for a machine which forms a coil spring by winding a heated rod or wire-shaped spring material into a spiral form. The machine (A) has a cassette mechanism (B) which may be removably mounted to a predetermined site of the body of the machine. The cassette mechanism is independent of the machine and comprises a mandrel (50), around which the rod is to be wound, and a lead-screw guide (59) for guiding the spring material in a direction along which the spring may be wound around the mandrel at a required lead angle. The forming device is replaceable.
