Conc. aq. soln. of anionic azo dyestuffs are produced by diazotising an aromatic amine and coupling with a coupling component contg. sulpho gps. in the absence of the usual mineral and fatty acids. The acid source for the diazotisation reaction is a low mol., non-surfactive aromatic sulphonic acid (I). Pref. (I) is a benzene, naphthalene or diphenyl mono- or poly-sulphonic acid, pref. p-toluenesulphonic acid (IA), pref. in conjunction with a solid cation exchanger contg. acid gps. pref. based on polystyrenesulphonic acids or phenol-HCHO condensates.
