In a new process for the prodn. of fluoro- and optionally chloro-substd. benzotrifluorides, fluoro- and chloro-substd. benzotrifluorides are hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst and of a hydrogen chloride acceptor. Of the products, fluorinated benztrifluorides of formula (III) are new and claimed per se: X1 = F or Cl, X2 = H or F when X1 is F, or F when X1 is Cl. Specifically claimed are (2,3,4,6-tetrafluoro-benzotrifluoride; 2,4,6-trifluoro- 3-chloro-benzottrifluoride; and 2,3,6-trifluoro benzotrifluoride.
